I recently read about black fishing. It is when non-black women impersonate black women on social media to gain a following. Due to the twitter account, N*****fishing, many (mostly white) ig models have been proven to be faking a black or mixed look. It is incredibly wrong and hurtful. I am not black or white. I am Indian (brown) so I have experienced racism and culture appropriation. Like for example, in my culture, the bindi is sacred. Now, it is seen as a bejeweled accessory that looks cute

5 years agoIn the western world. Another example of culture appropriation is when white women don black hairstyles such as cornrows, locs, and braids. I’m all for sharing each other’s culture, but when others put on something that has cultural significance (bindi, Native American headdress, black hairstyles) bc it looks cute, it shows that our culture is simply a costume for u to wear and then take it off when u r done. 5 years agoFarthest thing from okay. I’m not trying to say a white women cant wear cornrows. I’m saying, that if u r wearing it bc u think it’s the new asthetic or bc Kylie Jenner wore it, that’s wrong. Black women are put down for wearing their TRADITIONAL hairstyle while white women are seen as trendy and quirky wearing it. THAT is what’s not okay. So think twice before using another culture’s sacred symbol. If u still want to continue wearing them, at least show that u understand it’s significance and
